What is the Mangal font?
Mangal is the Unicode Devanagari font made by Microsoft and shipped with Windows since the Windows 2000 / XP era. Because it follows the Unicode standard, text typed in Mangal is real Hindi text, not English letters dressed up to look like Hindi. You can paste it into an email, a website, a PDF, Google search or WhatsApp, and it stays readable everywhere. That is why most central and state government offices, courts, universities and banks ask staff to work in Mangal or another Unicode Hindi font.
The font files themselves carry the history. The oldest Mangal build we hold (version 0.99) is credited to the National Centre for Software Technology, the later builds (1.20, 5.90 and 6.90) to Microsoft. You can compare every version on our Mangal font download page.
Mangal font typing: three ways to type Hindi
- Inscript is the Government of India standard keyboard for Indian scripts. Vowels sit on the left hand, consonants on the right. It is the default Hindi keyboard in Windows and the layout asked for in most SSC, CPCT and state typing tests. See the Mangal font keyboard chart.
- Remington Gail keeps the old typewriter key positions that Kruti Dev typists already know, but produces Unicode Mangal text. Many court and state exams allow it. See the Remington Gail keyboard.
- Phonetic lets you type Hindi the way you would write it in English letters:

Mangal font typing test online
Our Hindi typing test in Mangal font works like the real computer based skill test: a fixed passage, a timer of 1 to 15 minutes, optional backspace, and a result with gross speed, net speed, accuracy and key depressions per hour (KDPH). Exam presets for SSC, CPCT, court and railway tests are on the government exam typing test page, and English typists can use the English typing test.
Kruti Dev to Mangal and Mangal to Kruti Dev
Old office files are often typed in Kruti Dev 010 or DevLys 010. These fonts are not Unicode, so the text turns into strings like Hkkjr the moment the font is missing. Most Windows PCs already have Mangal (on Windows 10 and 11 it comes with the optional Devanagari Supplemental Fonts feature), so check your Fonts first.
