How the lessons work
Each lesson unlocks more of the keyboard. The tool picks real words that can be typed using only the allowed keys for your chosen layout, shows them as one line, and colours each letter as you type: green for correct, red for a mistake, an underline for the next letter. Finish the line to see your speed and accuracy, then press Next drill.
| Lesson | Keys | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Home row | A S D F G H J K L ; ‘ | Learn finger positions without looking |
| 2. Home + top row | adds Q to ] | Most vowel signs (Inscript) and core consonants |
| 3. Home + bottom row | adds Z to / | Anusvara, म, न, व, ल, स (Inscript) |
| 4. All lowercase keys | every key without Shift | Full words at steady rhythm |
| 5. Full keyboard | including Shift | Exam-ready text with conjuncts |
A 15 minute daily routine
- 5 minutes: the lesson you are on, until you finish three lines at 95% accuracy.
- 5 minutes: the next lesson, slowly, eyes on the screen.
- 5 minutes: a short Hindi typing test to measure progress.
Correct finger placement
Left hand fingers rest on A S D F, right hand fingers on J K L ;, thumbs on the space bar. In Inscript this puts ो े ् ि under your left fingers and प र क त under your right fingers, so the most frequent Hindi letters need no stretching. In Remington Gail the same home row gives ं े क ि ह ी र ा स, which is why typewriter users find it fast. Keep the keyboard chart open in another tab while you learn: Inscript chart or Remington Gail chart.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Wrong ि position. In Inscript type the consonant first and then ि. In Remington Gail type ि (key F) first. Mixing the two is the most common beginner error.
- Half letters. In Inscript use the halant key (D) between consonants. In Remington use the dedicated half-letter keys.
- Nukta and chandrabindu. Leave them for lesson 5. Exams mark them, but they appear far less often than basic letters.
